Hobgoblins of The Numb
Hobgoblins of The Numb Society
Legend has it that the Hobgoblins were once Orkon themselves. They gathered the remains of the great Devourer, scavenged what was left of his body when the Orcs clawed their way out of his gut into the world, and attempted to cook his flesh and eat it-seeking to absorb some of the wisdom of the fallen god. Almost immediately, their skin boiled at the contact and turned from the putrid green to a rusty crimson, darkening their stringy hair to pitch black and gray.
Some say that the Hobgoblins succeeded, and the Devourer is to be credited for their strong grasp of strategy and tactics. Whatever the source of their intelligence, there is no argument amongst even the most accomplished scholars of their talent on the battlefield and their incredible leadership when it comes to organizing armies and accomplishing a common goal. Hobgoblins learned very quickly early on that they could use this newfound wisdom to intimidate and persuade other races in The Numb. Goblins quickly fell into place, no match for their cunning and manipulation, while Bugbears were all too content to take orders if it meant that they were fed at the end of the day.
Where the Orkon settle out in the open in large villages, the Hobgoblins have built a massive city of red clay into the side of Whitestone Canyon. This city has been named ‘Nazeg Kreg’, or Bleeding Mountain in the goblin tongue. In the middle of winter, the mountain is coated in a thick layer of snow, but bits of the red city peek through giving off the appearance of gaping ‘wounds’ in the mountain side. As the monstrous armies of Tros grew, so too did the soldiers of Nazeg Kreg and their Hobgoblin overseers. As they progressed forward alongside Tros, the land around them turned to mirror that of The Numb. Prey moved on, the land scorched from stolen, dwarven machines of war, and the resources quickly dried up around them.
During one particularly heated battle with the Kor of Whitestone Canyon, the avatar of Tros purposefully drove the armies of Nazeg Kreg forward into an ambush, while the rest of his army circled around to overrun the humans while they were preoccupied in the canyon. Thousands of the goblin army were lost, slaughtered by both humans and goblin-kind as they desperately attempted to make a retreat. Blind sighted by Tros’s plans, many hobgoblins were not pleased with the resolution of the battle. Nazeg Kreg takes an army to run, and they had lost many of their hard-laborers. Not only that, but they were now powerless if the neighboring tribes of orcs were to take advantage of their weakened state. Seeing the ravaged land around them, and having experienced Tros’s betrayal first hand, many of the hobgoblins opted to leave The Numb and ally with the humans who stood their ground in the battle. Tros did not care about his soldiers and would continue his conquest of the world even if it meant burning it to the ground to do so.
[For PC backstories, no Hobgoblins today would have been a part of this war, but the generation before them was- so the wound is still very fresh.]
